FDA authorizes the first wearable that tracks ketones and glucose together
On August 25, 2026 the FDA granted marketing authorization to Abbott Diabetes Care for the Libre Duo 10 Day Continuous Dual Glucose Ketone Monitoring System, for people aged 2 years and older living with diabetes. It is the first wearable in the United States to monitor ketone levels continuously, and the first anywhere to read ketones and glucose from a single device.
- Measures ketones and glucose in the fluid just beneath the skin every minute, day and night, and sends readings wirelessly to a compatible smartphone with trend direction.
- Issues automatic alerts when ketone levels reach a concerning threshold, supporting earlier recognition of diabetic ketoacidosis before it becomes an emergency.
- Cleared through the De Novo premarket pathway with special controls, following a Breakthrough Device designation.
- Supported by six clinical studies enrolling more than 600 participants aged 2 years and older across a 10-day wear period.
Why it matters for pharmacists: ketone results are meant to be interpreted alongside glucose readings and symptoms, never in isolation. Expect counseling questions on sick-day rules, insulin pump and infusion-set failure, pediatric use from age two, and ketoacidosis risk in patients whose glucose still reads close to normal.
