Endowment Fund FAQ

Clear answers to the questions members and donors ask most about the NAPPSA Endowment Fund — what it is, how it works, and how your gift keeps giving.

Have a question that is not answered here? Contact the NAPPSA office and we will be glad to help.

What is the NAPPSA Endowment Fund?
The NAPPSA Endowment Fund is a permanent, professionally managed fund that creates a steady, dependable source of funding for NAPPSA programs and operations. Gifts to the endowment are invested rather than spent right away, so the Fund can support NAPPSA year after year, consistent with the mission of NAPPSA.
How is an endowment gift different from a regular donation?
A regular donation is usually spent soon after it is received. An endowment gift is invested and preserved, and only a small, sustainable portion of the returns is spent each year. That means a single endowment gift keeps giving indefinitely, while its principal stays invested and continues to grow.
Why is the Endowment Fund so important to NAPPSA?
Dues and event income rise and fall from year to year. The Endowment Fund gives NAPPSA a reliable income stream that is independent of those cycles, protecting core programs in lean years and funding long-term growth, scholarships, and research. It is how NAPPSA moves from year-to-year survival to lasting sustainability. Learn more on the NAPPSA Endowment Fund page.
How is the Fund invested?
The Fund is managed as a diversified, balanced portfolio made up of an equity portion and a fixed income portion. The equity portion is aimed at long-term real growth, while fixed income provides current income and stability. The overall objective is to maximize returns while minimizing risk and expense, preserving the long-term real value of the assets.
How much does the Fund spend each year?
NAPPSA uses a total-return-based spending policy, funding distributions from net investment income and net realized capital gains. Distributions are kept to a level that will not erode the Fund’s real assets over time, and the spending assumptions are reviewed every year by the Endowment Oversight Board.
Who manages and oversees the Endowment Fund?
The NAPPSA Endowment Oversight Board is the strategic body responsible for oversight and accountability of the Fund. It works closely with investment managers to set investment objectives, is responsible for the spending rules that keep the Fund sustainable, and helps drive fundraising campaigns and new ideas for raising support.
Can I direct my gift to a specific purpose?
Yes. You can dedicate a gift to a purpose you care about, such as scholarships or research. NAPPSA honors donor intent, and the Fund’s Annual Report clearly shows every dedicated gift being used for the exact purpose the donor specified.
How can I contribute to the Endowment Fund?
You can give online through the NAPPSA giving page, take part in the annual NAPPSA 5K Run/Walk, or become a NAPPSA Endowment Partner or Sponsor. Gifts of any size help build the Fund. See the Patron Tiers & Legacy Wall for giving levels.
Will my gift be recognized?
Yes. Donors can be recognized through the NAPPSA Patron Tiers and honored on the NAPPSA Legacy Wall, where one year of giving becomes a lasting legacy that is celebrated for years to come.
How do I know my gift is used as intended?
Transparency is built in. The NAPPSA Endowment Fund’s Annual Report is presented in a way that clearly shows all endowment donations dedicated to a specific purpose are used for the purpose specified by the donors. You can also review the Financials & Transparency page.
