NAPPSA Foundation • Established 2006

The NAPPSA Endowment Fund

A permanent, professionally managed fund that turns today’s generosity into dependable support for NAPPSA’s mission — every single year, for generations to come.

What It Is

A steady, dependable source of funding — built to last

The NAPPSA Endowment Fund is designed to create a steady, dependable source of funding for the programs and operations of NAPPSA, in a manner consistent with the stated mission of NAPPSA. The proceeds from the Endowment Fund may also be used for purposes specified by the donor(s) to the endowment.

Unlike an ordinary donation that is spent within a year, a gift to the endowment is invested permanently. Only a prudent portion of the returns is spent each year, so the original gift stays intact and keeps working — funding NAPPSA’s mission this year, next year, and for decades to come.

Every Silver, Gold, and Platinum Patron gift on our Patron Tiers & Legacy Wall helps build this fund. Endowment gifts do not disappear after one year — they are invested so that today’s generosity keeps giving for decades.

Why It Matters

Why the Endowment Fund is critical to NAPPSA’s future

An association is only as strong as the stability of its funding. Dues and event income rise and fall with the economy, attendance, and the volunteer energy of any given year. The Endowment Fund is how NAPPSA breaks that cycle — converting one-time gifts into a permanent financial foundation that protects the mission from year-to-year uncertainty and fuels long-term growth.

Sustainability, not survival

A growing endowment gives NAPPSA a reliable annual income stream that is independent of dues cycles and event turnout, so core programs continue even in lean years.

Permanence & compounding

Because the principal is preserved and invested, every dollar is designed to keep earning — today’s gifts compound into far greater support over time.

Independence & freedom to lead

Predictable endowment income lets leadership plan multi-year initiatives, scholarships, and research boldly — instead of limiting ambition to what this year’s fundraising allows.

A lasting legacy

Named and dedicated gifts live on permanently. Donors see their values honored year after year on the Legacy Wall and in the programs they choose to support.

Resilience in hard times

A well-diversified fund is a financial shock absorber, carrying NAPPSA through recessions, disruptions, and unexpected costs without cutting mission-critical work.

Confidence that attracts support

A transparent, professionally governed endowment signals stewardship and permanence — giving major donors and partners the confidence to invest at a higher level.

How We Manage It

The Endowment Matrix — three core pillars

To maximize both the short-term and the long-term contributions to NAPPSA budgets, the Fund is managed around three core pillars, all enforced through the governance and management structure of the endowment and continually monitored by the NAPPSA Endowment Oversight Board.

Fundraising Strategy

The Fund’s growth and sustainability depend on our ability to raise funds and sustain a steady stream of inflows from members, partners, and events.

Investment Strategy

Maximize return on invested assets while minimizing risk and expense — through prudent investing and a diversified, balanced portfolio.

Spending Strategy

A clear, sustainable spending rule ensures distributions support NAPPSA today without eroding the Fund’s real value over time.

Fundraising strategy

The success of the NAPPSA Endowment Fund depends on our ability to raise funds to ensure its growth and sustainability. As conceived, the primary sources of inflows include:

  • NAPPSA B-2-B Rebate Earnings
  • Annual NAPPSA 5K Run/Walk
  • Donations from NAPPSA members
  • Donations from NAPPSA Endowment Partners and Sponsors

The NAPPSA Endowment Oversight Board and NAPPSA leadership continually look for additional creative ways to source funds and sustain inflows, and the Board plays a vital role in driving these fundraising efforts.

Investment strategy

The overall investment objective is to maximize the return on invested assets while minimizing risk and expenses, through prudent investing and a diversified portfolio. This preserves the long-term, real purchasing power of assets while providing a relatively predictable and growing stream of annual distributions. Fund assets are managed as a balanced portfolio of equities (for long-term real growth) and fixed income (for current income and stability), with cash held only for liquidity needs.

Spending strategy

A clearly defined, sustainable spending rule is as important as the investment strategy. The Fund uses a total-return-based spending policy, funding distributions from net investment income and net realized capital gains. Distributions are kept to a level that will not erode the Fund’s real assets over time, and spending assumptions are reviewed annually. Our spending strategy also honors donor intent — the Fund’s Annual Report clearly shows every dedicated gift being used for the exact purpose the donor specified.

Oversight

Governance & the Endowment Oversight Board

The key to success across all three pillars is the governance structure behind the endowment. The Endowment Oversight Board is the strategic body for oversight and accountability of the Fund. Board members work closely with investment managers to set investment objectives, are responsible for the spending rules that keep the Fund sustainable, and help drive fundraising campaigns and new ideas for raising support.
