Practice as a pharmacist in the United States

Start with NABP’s current FPGEC requirements and the board of pharmacy in the state where you want to practice. FPGEC certification evaluates foreign pharmacy education and credentials; it does not grant a pharmacist license.

  1. Read the current FPGEC candidate guidance. Check education and registration eligibility before paying fees.
  2. Ask your chosen state board which application, practical experience and examinations apply to you.
  3. Record document instructions, deadlines and costs directly from the official sources.
  4. Use NAPPSA’s application resources to prepare your professional story while you confirm eligibility.

Practice as a pharmacist in Canada

Use Pharmacists’ Gateway Canada to understand the international graduate pathway, then confirm the requirements of your intended province or territory. Québec has an alternative pathway. A U.S. pathway should not be used as a substitute for Canadian requirements.

  1. Choose the province or territory you are considering.
  2. Review the official pathway, credential evaluation, language, practical training and examination requirements that apply.
  3. Keep a list of questions for the provincial regulator and compare current costs and timelines before committing.

Build a research, industry or academic career

Begin with the role you want, rather than assuming every career follows the pharmacist licensure route. Read each employer’s or university’s requirements for that specific position.

  1. Choose an area: pharmaceutical research, clinical research, regulatory affairs, manufacturing, teaching or another scientific field.
  2. Compare three relevant positions or programs. Note the required qualifications, skills and evidence of experience.
  3. Prepare a short research-interest statement or a role-specific CV. Highlight your methods, projects, publications and contributions accurately.
  4. Ask a mentor for feedback on one focused question.

Turn questions into a manageable plan

You do not need a perfect plan to begin. Write down these five items in your own notes:

  1. My goal: the role, program or project I want to explore.
  2. My destination: the country and state, province or institution relevant to that goal.
  3. What I have verified: an official source, the date checked and the requirement it confirms.
  4. What I still need to ask: one question for a regulator, employer, program or mentor.
  5. My next action: one task I can complete this week, with a realistic target date.

Make a mentorship request easy to answer

Try this introduction: “I trained in [field/country] and am exploring [goal]. I have reviewed [official source]. My main question is [one specific question]. I would value a short conversation about [topic].”

On the mentorship form, choose Nigeria-Americas career connections and include your time zone and general availability. Do not include identity documents, patient details or other people’s private information.

Can NAPPSA guarantee a mentor, job or admission?

These resources help you prepare and connect. Mentor availability, employer selection and program admission are separate decisions. An inquiry is not a confirmed placement.

Where should I ask about my documents or application?

Use the official regulator or program’s secure process for case-specific questions. A mentor can help you organize questions and discuss experience; send official documents only through the channels the receiving organization requests.
